Heirloom Apple Varieties
Swaar
First recorded in Esopus, New York at the beginning of the 19th century. Swaar is a Dutch word referring to the heaviness & density of the fruit. This variety was raised by Dutch settlers around the Hudson Valley, though it is an American apple. The flavor is noted as exceptional after some weeks in refrigerated storage, which helps induce it’s complex and nutty flavors. The apple will hang on the tree long into winter, providing a lovely treat for browsing deer and birds. We harvest in late October.
