Heirloom Apple Varieties

Roxbury Russet

Said to be the oldest named American apple, dating back to the 1600’s in Roxbury, Massachusetts, this reliable cropper is a wonderful late season classic. Though its russet is prominent, with proper sun they will shine on one cheek like a Monet sunset, and taste of sweet guava and persimmon with a dusting of coconut. Hard and crunchy, these sandpapery apples are excellent keepers and make a superb sauce. They really are steady, consistent, and predictable, which makes them equally desirable to grow. One of the only varieties that cropped despite our freeze last year, there's a reason Roxbury Russet is so long lasting and in a league of its own. The Roxbury Russet is generally available from mid-October to the end of our farm market season.
