Heirloom Apple Varieties
Red Astrachan
Our first eating apple of the new season was originally from Russia. It is said that cuttings were brought to this country by Swedish immigrants in the early 1800’s. It’s good for fresh eating or sliced into yogurt or cereal and is also an old favorite for pies and sauce. A medium to large apple with thin tender skin and interesting coloration varying around red and pink. The flesh is soft, tender and juicy with a sprightly flavor, and sometimes tinged with red. We look forward to this apple on the first day of August.
