Heirloom Apple Varieties
Pound Sweet
There are several listed cultivars of Pound Sweet, all of which are first recorded in either 1867 or 1869. The name is applied to any number of large, sweet apples. Tom Burford, an orchardist in Virginia describes this apple under the name Pumpkin Sweet. Some Pound Sweets are recorded with greenish yellow skin while an Indiana cultivar has red striped skin. We harvest our greenish-yellow skinned and yellow flesh variety in early October. Whatever the name, this apple was widely popular as livestock feed and for apple butter throughout the 19th century. We’re fairly certain the horses, cows, pigs and chickens who enjoyed it weren’t too caught up in the semantics.
