Heirloom Apple Varieties
Pomme Gris
The Grey Apple’s origins are thought to be Canada, from whence it was later introduced to England in 1794 by Alexander Barclay. Its introduction to the St. Lawrence River Valley was thought to be from European French immigrants; making it a long round about trip for the apple to reach the continental United States. This fruit has thick, tough skin, russetted and golden-brown. Some specimens may present a red blush, most have conspicuous white or grey spots. Like our Pearmains, the flesh is crisp, textured and aromatic, making for a high quality dessert apple.
