Heirloom Apple Varieties
Orleans Reinette
*Deep sigh….As the pearl earring was to Vermeer, the Orleans Reinette is to us. A true work of apple art; an oblate glowing ochre orb, dusted with a barn red and a splattering of golden freckles. Orleans’ wonder is far from just visual, boasting rich and wonderfully complex flavors of nutmeg spice and dash of rum-cola with a slice of lime, there is a reason this apple has been preserved since 1776 and exalted by the French as the creme de la creme of the pomes. We couldn't agree more. Its excellence shines in all its forms, baked in a pie, pressed in sweet cider and drying into the most superior of all the dried apple contenders. We relish these stunning treasures, be sure to take a pause to admire the real life portraits our pome ‘pearl earrings’ paint. Later harvest variety, usually mid-October.
