Heirloom Apple Varieties
Mother
A Massachusetts original, Mother was once highly prized and adored for its flavor but is now a very rare variety. First exhibited in 1844 at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society meeting. Some note the flavor to be balsamic. It was very popular in English gardens prior to World War II, and was referred to as the “American Mother.” The tree is slow to come into fruiting, but as it matures it becomes a vigorously growing, hardy bearing variety. You may need to thin at fruit set. Best used as a dessert apple, and is not long keeping. We harvest in September.
We have limited amount of this variety so you may not find it immediately available in our Farm Market.
