Heirloom Apple Varieties

Hewes Virginia Crab

Hewes Virginia Crab was grown in Thomas Jefferson’s orchard in Virginia circa the 1700’s for crafting hard cider. This little sugar bomb has a very sweet flavor with a bold traditional crab apple kick. It lends a cinnamon flavor to cider, and even today is highly sought after for its juice. It is one of the few apples recommended for a single variety cider. Excellent for snacking or making crab apple jelly. This apple is a petite pink gem. Harvest September through October.

Speaking of cider, here is an interesting blog post asking compelling questions regarding management approaches (read: spraying needs) for cider versus dessert apples.
