Heirloom Apple Varieties

Foxwhelp

The Foxwhelp is one of the longest surviving cider apple varieties, first recorded in 1664. Originating from England, it is not without controversy in North America; grafted cuttings brought over some decades ago yielded fruit that was completely tasty and edible out of hand. True Foxwhelps are unpalatable when freshly eaten. The mystery remains as to whether true Foxwhelp cuttings were actually brought over or if the tree adopted some of the characteristics of its root stock. Our Foxwhelp, we believe, is the true English variety as none of us care to eat it out of hand. We begin harvest in early October.

You will not find Foxwhelp in our Farm Market as we sell it exclusively to regional cideries.
