Heirloom Apple Varieties

Fameuse/Snow Apple

This aromatic, crisp apple was the “famous apple.” Originally from Quebec, it was planted in the early 1600’s. One hundred years later, it was grown extensively through Northern New England, perhaps largely due to its resilience to cold weather as well as against disease. However, the introduction of Russian varieties in the early 19th century precipitated a large-scale loss of the Snow Apple across its growing region due to apple scab. Zeke Goodband, Scott Farm’s former orchard manager, found an old Fameuse tree in a farm yard in Maine and brought cuttings from it to Scott Farm. It is best for fresh use. A small apple with green skin and a red blush, Fameuse is thought to be parent to the well known commercial variety, McIntosh. Harvests late September.
