Heirloom Apple Varieties
Egremont Russet
The Egremont Russet is a medium-sized apple far and away from most mainstream varieties. The flesh seems quite dry and dries further with keeping; it is described as moist rather than juicy. Like the Zabragau, the flavor is “nutty,” and more delicate than most varieties, though still quite sweet. Like some of the best heirloom apples, the flavor and texture are reminiscent of a firm pear. Include it in your next cheese platter. The tree is rather cold-hardy and scab resistant. We harvest in late September, enjoy by New Year’s.
