Heirloom Apple Varieties
Cornish Gilliflower
Of the many interests pursued by the elite classes of Victorian England, apple connoisseurs today can be thankful for the era’s appreciation of the Cornish Gilliflower. This apple is noted for its aromatic qualities; both in fruit and blossom one can smell a distinct clove scent. Gilliflower is thought to be a corruption of the French word ‘girofle’ or clove. The apple is rather handsome with a green skin dotted in red-orange and flecked with russeting. In storage one will notice an increasing floral quality to the flavor and smell. Look for it in our farmstand in mid-September.
