Claygate Pearmain

A fawn-colored, small russeted apple originally found growing in a hedgerow in Surrey, England in the 1820s. After gaining the attention of the Royal Horticultural Society, it became an indispensable fresh eating apple among the Victorians. This may have been due not only to its excellent flavor, but the scab resistant nature of the tree, as well as its hardiness in cold, wet winters. It is also a consistent cropper and stores well. Crisp, juicy with an aromatic honey flavor with a slight nutty quality. We harvest Claygate in early October.
