Heirloom Apple Varieties
Chestnut Crab
This is a standout crabapple not only in terms of its larger fruit size, but its palpability to eat out of hand. Many people rave about it’s crisp, sweet-tart flavor with nutty overtones. The skin is gold with red/orange streaks and some russeting. Harvests early September and into late October as it has a long ripening period. Cold hardy to Zone 3, generally disease resistant. A good bet for the home gardener or edible landscaper. This variety was developed in Minnesota by the same extension agency that brought you Honeycrisp; it is a cross of Malinda, king of the Minnesota apples.
