Heirloom Apple Varieties
Beauty of Bath
The Beauty of Bath is a variety far removed from the commercial market. It is an early season variety- ripening in late July to early August- and as with all early season apples, it does not store well. This variety is best eaten a day or two after being picked, though can be quite sweet and enjoyable if you catch it at the later end of its harvest season. Victorian apple enthusiasts adored this variety as an indicator for the harvest season to come, which might explain why the Beauty of Bath survived through the commercialization of the apple market. It is also a popular apple in Ireland. The red blushed skin bleeds into its white flesh when you take a bite. Also noted for scab resistance.
