Heirloom Apple Varieties

Winesap

A popular apple in the mid-Atlantic states, Winesap was first widely noted in 1817, though it is believed that it was known during the American Colonial Period as well, particularly for cider. It has a coarse grain and a very crisp, juicy white flesh. When ripe they have enough sugar to balance the strong, tart flavor. Excellent for both eating out of hand, cooking, and cider. Stores well. A medium sized red apple. Dependable bearer and vigorous grower. Late bloomer, thus likely to escape spring frost damage. We harvest around early October.
